When you buy a bottle of wine in a shop for £5.00 the actual value of the wine you are drinking is approximately 31p!
When you buy a bottle of wine in a shop for £10.00 the value of the wine you are enjoying is eight times that amount, approximately £2.70. £20.00 a bottle and you get nearly 23 times more value of wine!
Each bottle of wine you buy has many of the same fixed costs whether it be £5 or £50 a bottle – wine duty is fixed at £2.23 per bottle, the costs for production, bottling, labeling, transportation are pretty much the same regardless of the sale value. The only variables are the margin the retailer adds on top, VAT, and of course the value of the wine itself! For this reason, I would always advise buying a bottle of wine for at least £10 (at shop prices) and savouring the magical experience this can be versus cheap £5 plonk.
At Il Girasole we have the benefit of buying wine direct from the wholesaler in Italy. This helps us to ensure that we are able to offer the best quality wines at competitive prices to our customers. Even our house wine, where many restaurants offer something akin to vinegar in the hope you will buy something more expensive, is good quality, very drinkable and hugely popular with our customers.
